Whether a candy buffet attendant needs a food handler card depends on where the event is. Some states require a card for anyone who handles unpackaged food for the public; others leave it to counties or cities; some have no general requirement at all. Venues and caterers may also ask for one even where the law doesn't.
The answer for your business comes from the health department for the county where you work, not from a blog post, so here is how to find it and how to make compliance easy.
How to check the rules for your area
- Search your state or county health department site for "food handler card" or "food worker card".
- Check whether it applies to temporary events and to prepackaged food; rules often differ for wrapped versus unwrapped food.
- Ask the venue whether it requires cards from outside vendors' staff, whatever the law says.
- Keep copies of each attendant's card, and note expiry dates; many need renewing every few years.
Many food handler courses are short and online. Even where a card isn't required, training your attendants is a selling point in your vendor packet.
Hygiene rules worth following everywhere
- Gloves or tongs for any unwrapped candy; no hands in the jars.
- One scoop per jar, and spare scoops for when one is dropped.
- Hand washing before setup and after breaks.
- Covered jars until guests arrive.
- Allergen labels on every jar.
Wrapped candy makes it simpler
Individually wrapped candy means less handling of exposed food, which venues and health inspectors tend to prefer at self-serve stations. Prices as of November 2026:
